Here are some basic guidelines for submitting to our magazine:
Fiction and Poetry submissions are currently closed as of December 31st, 2011. Check back later in the new year for information on when we will re-open submissions.
All submissions must be speculative fiction, or at least have a strong speculative fiction element. No cliches unless you're doing a parody, and even then it has to be really good for us to take it. All work must be original and unpublished. We will check. We do not take reprints. Please tell us if your submission is a simultaneous submission; we may have to take that into account. Also, any sex or violence should be artistically justified; no excessive gore.
We accept science fiction, fantasy and horror prose, poetry, and non-fiction. Our word limits are:
- Prose: 2500 wds
- Poetry: 3 pages
- Non-fiction: 1000 wds
These are pretty strict word limits. If you have something longer that you think would fit our magazine, please query us first. If we like the idea, we'll consider the story. Remember: accepting the query only means we'll look at the story; it doesn't guarantee we'll accept it.
We have four submission deadlines per year: December 15, March 15, July 15, and September 15. Any works received after these dates are held over for the next deadline.
For prose, we pay 1 cent CDN per word. For poetry, we pay $ 5 CDN per poem. We pay a maximum of $ 10 CDN for non-fiction. We buy First World Serial Rights, First World Electronic Rights, and an Option to Buy Non-Exclusive World Anthology Rights.
All text submissions should be sent as a Word or RTF file to submissions [at] thegloaming.com (replace [at] with @). Send the file as an attachment and put your name (or pen-name) and the title of your story in the subject line of your email. Queries should be sent to editors [at] thegloaming.com. You must query first for non-fiction. Submissions should be in Standard Manuscript Format. For an example of standard manuscript format, see http://www.sfwa.org/2008/11/manuscript-preparation/ .
We are also always on the lookout for new artists to profile for our “Artist of the Week” feature! Send us samples of your art to: art [at] thegloaming.com.
